The City of San Marcos, in partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, will host a free child safety presentation for parents and kids on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at 5:30 pm. The event will be held at the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive.
The event is being held in conjunction with National Missing Children’s Day, which is observed annually on May 25 in order to encourage parents and guardians to take 25 minutes out of their day to talk to their children about safety. An analysis of attempted abduction cases by NCMEC found that in 84 percent of cases, children escaped would-be abductors through their own actions.
The event in San Marcos will feature a presentation by Phyllis Adkisson Shess, J.D., the director of sex offender management for the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. Shess is a veteran trail attorney and has tried more than a hundred criminal cases including homicides, child abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. She is an expert in sex offender management and has been instrumental in developing best practices for law enforcement and municipalities to create safer communities.
“We know that teaching children about safety works,” explained Crime Prevention Specialist Veronica Martinez. “Community events like this play an important role in helping parents understand how they can help save a child’s life.”
The presentation will also offer free finger printing starting at 5 pm along with important information for children and parents about keeping kids safe.
