EDCO Waste & Recycling Services provides a public recycling buyback center located in San Marcos.
Establish trash and recycling service
If you are moving to San Marcos and need to set up trash and recycling service, please contact EDCO directly at (760) 744-2700 or visit EDCO's website. Read the city's solid waste and recycling franchise agreement.
Household recycling
Convenient curbside recycling is available for single-family residences through EDCO Waste & Recycling Services. Place all recyclable materials in the blue recycling cart and set it at the curb on your regular trash collection day. Recyclable items include:
- Newspaper, cardboard, and mixed paper (e.g., copy paper, "junk" mail, magazines, telephone books, cereal boxes)
- Aluminum cans, steel tin cans, and rigid plastics
- Glass containers and plastics marked with "1" through "7"
- Beverage containers labeled CA Redemption Value or CA Cash Refund

New – organics recycling program
Recycling organic waste is now easier than ever. EDCO offers organic waste pick-up on your regularly scheduled trash day. Simply place the following in your green cart:
- Food scraps
- Landscaping and pruning debris
- Non-hazardous wood cuttings
- Food-soiled paper waste
If it grows, it can be recycled in your green cart!
Yard Waste Recycling
Convenient curbside yard waste recycling is offered to single family residences through the city’s contract with EDCO Recycling and Waste Removal. Yard waste materials like grass clippings, weeds, tree branches no longer than fourfeet in length, leaves and hedge trimmings may be recycled by putting the material into a rigid yard waste can and placing the can at the curb on the regular trash collection day.

Mandatory Commercial and Multi-Family Recycling
- Mandatory commercial & multi-family recycling
Starting in 2012, most businesses and all multi-family residences are required by state law to participate in a recycling program. Learn about recycling laws and how to sign up recycling services.
- Mandatory organics recycling
Since April 1, 2016, businesses have been required by state law to recycle their organic waste. The phased in implementation schedule varies depending on the amount of waste businesses generate per week.
