New energy efficient street lights being tested

Post Date:08/14/2009 10:00 AM

San Marcos has initiated a pilot project testing the attributes of both induction and light emitting diode (LED) streetlights in various areas of the City. This project is a partnership between the City and San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) and the lights installed to date have been selected and paid for by SDG&E. Both induction and LED offer several attributes that the City is interested in: energy savings, improved color recognition and long life.

Currently, the City uses low-pressure sodium (LPS) street lights which need little energy but do not last very long (typically three to five years) and cast a yellow/orange color light. The LED and induction lights both are rated to last at least 50,000 hours (approximately 12 years) and they can cast a range of light color from a blue-white to a warmer white. Changing from an orange glow to a whiter light allows better recognition of objects and people – hopefully enhancing public safety and traffic safety.

A consideration of the street lighting review under way is the amount of light into the night sky. Businesses, residences, roadway lighting and other outdoor lighting sources affect the ability to see stars and other celestial bodies. The City is investigating light sources that could be controlled and aimed – preventing light trespass and glare into the night sky while also providing adequate light for public safety and traffic safety. This project was designed in a way to be able to examine an emerging technology in a variety of settings throughout San Marcos – residential, traffic intersections, commercial/industrial, parks and parking lots.

Your feedback is critical in helping San Marcos choose the right light. Thank you for participating.
