Protecting property values and neighborhoods in San Marcos

To help maintain property values and ensure a high quality of life for residents, the City of San Marcos has adopted a Property Value Protection and Neighborhood Preservation Ordinance. This ordinance sets clear standards for property appearance and upkeep, complementing the existing San Marcos Municipal Code.

What the ordinance covers

The ordinance applies to parts of private property visible from public streets or sidewalks. Key areas of focus include:

  • Outside Storage: Limits on visible storage of items and accumulation of junk.
  • Furniture Placement: Prohibiting indoor furniture from being placed outside.
  • Property Maintenance: Requiring proper upkeep of buildings, landscaping, and vegetation to prevent overgrown or neglected conditions.
  • Prohibited Items and Structures: Bans on abandoned vehicles, neglected appliances, and temporary tents, shelters, canopies, and tarps.
  • Parking Rules: Guidelines for permissible off-street parking locations.

These standards are designed to preserve the beauty and integrity of San Marcos neighborhoods, ensuring they remain welcoming and safe for all.
