Purpose

The Youth Commission, in collaboration with the Parks & Recreation Department, reviews, plans, organizes, attends and participates in a variety of youth activities, issues, events and projects in the City. Commissioners advise the City as to its proper role and participation in the development of youth programs and to promote the general welfare of the young people in the City of San Marcos.

The Youth Commission has the following goals:

Obtain greater visibility within the youth commission and use this in a positive and effective way.
Learn about and address the needs of youth and teens in San Marcos.
Associate with other youth organizations to exchange ideas/information and co-sponsor events.
Provide support and volunteers for events and projects for and benefiting youth and teens or enriching the lives of others.

Membership:	Nine regular members and two alternate members appointed by the City Council
Meeting Time/Location:	First Monday each month, 4:00 pm / City Hall - Council Chamber
Length of Term:	Three years (term runs from July 1^stto June 30^theach year) Commitments include attending monthly meetings (up to 2 hours), training and orientation, other commission/council meetings and time required to plan, organize, attend and participate in several city events and workshops.
Responsible Department:	Parks & Recreation Services Department
Qualifications/Conditions:	Applicant must reside within city limits or within the boundaries of the San Marcos Unified School District; have completed the sixth grade but not yet attained the age of twenty-one years of age at the time of appointment. Commissioners must participate in at least 80% of all commission activities.
Compensation:	Chair - $30 per meeting / Commissioner - $15 per meeting
Financial Disclosure:	None
Training:	City staff provides an initial orientation and ethics training in accordance with State law

Each year the Commission will choose additional projects for the upcoming term. Existing projects include:

July 4^th Celebration, Santa’s Village, Egg Scramble– Volunteer Staff
Diversity Town Hall - A Celebration of Diversity in San Marcos
