What is solar?
Solar energy systems collect sunlight and turn it into energy to power your home or business. These systems can be used for:
- Heating or cooling spaces.
- Generating electricity.
- Heating water.
Most solar systems are made up of panels or arrays mounted on rooftops or ground frames.
A small rooftop solar system is one that:
- Produces 10 kilowatts (kW) or less of electricity.
- Provides 30 kilowatts (kW) or less of thermal energy.
Important: Your solar system must follow all local and state building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and fire safety codes. Solar panels cannot exceed the height limits set by your property’s zoning rules.

The City of San Marcos has made it easier and faster to get permits for residential rooftop solar systems and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
